Why 'Lord Flame'?

'Lord Flame' was the pseudonym of a man called Samuel Johnson (not the Samuel Johnson, just a Samuel Johnson). His more common pseudonym was 'Maggoty' Johnson. The following extract is from the guidebook for Gawsworth Hall, a stately home in Cheshire.
Samuel Johnson [was] the Gawsworth Jester, more commonly known as Maggoty Johnson. Maggoty Johnson was dancing master to the Harrington children. He was one of the last jesters in England as well as being an actor and a playwright. His pseudonym was 'Lord Flame', the main character in his own play Hurlothrumbo which ran for 50 nights at the Haymarket in London. Towards the end of his life he helped to finance the founding of the now famous firm of Justerini and Brooks, wine-merchants.Samuel Johnson [was] the last professional jester in England [and] lived at the house, and eccentric to the last lies buried in the nearby spinney called 'Maggoty Johnson's Wood.'The play, Hurlothrumbo, exists in the British Library, and was printed 'for the author' in 1729 which gives a rough date for his life.
In 1993 I formed a medieval music and storytelling group, and casting around for something colourful to call ourselves, lighted on 'Lord Flame' as a suitable nickname. The rest of the band were lumped together as 'The Copmanthorpe Posse', CD available in the foyer. The name has outlived the band, but seemed appropriate for the kind of work I do.Now you know, and I bet you wish you'd never asked.
